DAYTON, Tenn.— The Montreat College men's soccer team captured a 1-0 victory over Bryan College on the road Saturday afternoon, with goalkeeper
Frankie Zavala delivering the standout performance. Behind
Alejandro Hernandez's first-half tally and Zavala's career-high 13 saves, the Cavaliers snagged all three points in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) standings.
Following the match, Montreat improved to 3-8-1 overall and 2-4-1 in league play. Meanwhile, the Lions fell to 1-9-1 overall and 1-5-1 in AAC competitions.
The match commenced with the Cavs establishing an early offensive rhythm. Hernandez highlighted the visitors' strong start when he headed home a goal in the 13
th minute off a long throw-in from
Jared McCall. The header marked Hernandez's second tally of the season, putting the Cavaliers in front, 1-0. Zavala played a pivotal role in maintaining the lead, recording multiple saves against a persistent Bryan offense, including stops in the 16
th, 18
th and 22
nd minutes.
Montreat effectively countered the Lions' attacks, while the offense continued to press forward, forcing Bryan's goalie into multiple stops. Despite several offside calls and fouls, the Cavs safeguarded their advantage, concluding the period with a 1-0 lead.
The second half commenced with the away side maintaining its narrow edge. Zavala's goalkeeping was crucial, as he made several saves, denying shots time and time again. Montreat's defense stood tall, preventing the Lions from capitalizing on their numerous attempts.
In the mean time, the Cavaliers' offensive efforts included shots from McCall and
Uros Markovic, though both were saved or went high. Despite Bryan's persistent pressure and multiple corner kicks, Montreat's defense remained resolute. The half ended without any additional goals, preserving the Cavs' 1-0 victory.
BC had its chances, outshooting the visitors 30-8 overall and 14-5 on target. The hosts also registered four additional corner kicks compared to their counterparts (7-3); however, Zavala's career day of 13 saves sustained the Cavaliers' defensively and carried the squad across the finish line.
Hernandez scored the game-winning goal for Montreat, converting his only shot on target. McCall contributed with an assist, also managing two shots on goal.
"It wasn't a pretty game, but the boys worked hard, and their hard work got them the win," said assistant coach
Adam Lund. "It wasn't the game plan to defend the whole second half, but the team was resilient, and we're happy with the final result."
In their next game, the Cavs will look to defend their home turf at Pulliam Stadium as they take on Milligan University on Wednesday, Oct. 8. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Black Mountain, N.C.
