MARIETTA, Ga.— The Montreat College women's wrestling team sent 19 of its student-athletes to Marietta, Ga. on Saturday for the Eagle Madness Open, hosted by Life University. In total, 10 different Cavaliers placed at the event, and 15 Cavs secured at least one win during the tournament.
Shay Potter captured Montreat's best result of the day, seizing a second-place finish at 180. Ranked No. 20 in the NAIA, Potter rattled off three consecutive victories en route to the championship match. The Oakdale, Calif. native utilized a 3-1 decision and a pair of pins to make the final. Potter ultimately took second in the bracket after suffering a 10-0 loss to the NAIA's No. 2-ranked wrestler.
Not far off from her teammate,
Sheyla Ochoa Salgado went 3-2 to end fourth in the 117-lb weight class. Following a 10-0 tech fall defeat to the NCAA's No. 3-ranked competitor, Ochoa Salgado pieced together back-to-back pins and a 10-0 tech fall in her favor. The freshman then landed on the wrong side of a 5-1 decision in the third-place bout.
Both
Morgan Repasky and
Manoela Almeida grabbed fifth place at 103. The former did so with a pair of victories via fall before dropping consecutive matches. Meanwhile, Almeida notched a 16-9 decision triumph prior to defeats by tech fall and decision.
At 110,
Sirenity Davis bounced back from a loss to the NAIA's No. 5-ranked wrestler to conclude fifth overall. The Chester, S.C. native capitalized on a pin in 1:15 and a 10-0 tech fall to achieve the result. Davis's tournament run stopped when she picked up her second loss, this time via a 14-3 tech fall.
Like the 103-lb bracket, a pair of Cavaliers tied for fifth at 124. Both
Daniela Espinal and
Alanna Garner went 3-2 on Saturday. The latter corralled her wins with two pins and a forfeit, while the former claimed victory through a trio of methods—fall, tech fall and decision.
Ashley Saucedo registered Montreat's sixth fifth-place result of the weekend. Wrestling at 180, Saucedo went 2-2 with a pair of wins via pin in under one minute. One of Saucedo's defeats came at the hands of Potter.
Dayra Martinez and
Nicole Lewis rounded out the placements for the Cavs, with each landing sixth in their respective weight classes. Both wrestlers ultimately went 1-3 on Saturday. Martinez recorded an 8-2 decision win in the 117-lb weight class, and Lewis pinned a 160-lb opponent in 4:51.
