WALESKA, Ga.— The Montreat College men's wrestling team traveled to Waleska, Ga. on Friday for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) dual against the No. 23-ranked Reinhardt University Eagles. While the Cavaliers landed on the wrong side of a 46-4 final score,
Boedi Kirkland managed to break the program's single-season wins record during the dual. As a squad, the Cavs fell to 3-4 (0-3 AAC) with the defeat, and the Eagles improved to 10-3 (1-2 AAC) on the year.
A swift pin, a tech fall and a major decision allowed the hosts to jump out to a 15-0 lead on the visitors. Kirkland had an answer to Reinhardt's early success, however. Just a freshman, Kirkland competed in his 31
st bout of the campaign Friday evening, and he captured his record-setting 24
th triumph of the season. The Catawba, N.C. native cruised to a 10-2 major decision over his 149-lb opponent, continuing his dominant run of form. With the victory, Kirkland added four points to Montreat's tally on the team scoreboard.
"We are extremely proud of Boedi and the way he has been competing this season," said head coach
Jim Connaghan. "He is embracing challenges and the mentality we are providing in the room, and it is showing on the mat."
RU shook off the loss and started another winning streak at 157. The Eagles claimed the final six matchups of the night, tacking on an additional 31 team points in the process. When the dust settled, No. 23 Reinhardt secured a 46-4 AAC victory.
The Montreat College men's wrestling team takes a break from dual action next Friday and Saturday when it heads to Marshall, Mo. for the Missouri Valley Invite.
