BRISTOL, Tenn.— Montreat College's men's wrestling squad traveled to compete in the King Open, an all-day open tournament hosted by King University, on Sunday. Ten Montreat student-athletes wrestled in the event, and three Cavaliers placed in their respective brackets.
Senior
Dylan Hogan completed his event with a record of 3-3 at 174, finishing sixth. He won his first bout with a 10-3 decision. After losing his next match by an 18-2 tech fall, Hogan faced off against Cavalier teammate
Angel Turner. Hogan pinned Turner in 3:44 to move on in the consolation bracket. The Bushkill, Pa. native secured another pin in 3:47 before collecting his second loss. Hogan advanced to the fifth-place match, where he was beaten by decision 13-7, ending his day in sixth place.
Josh Mojica-Smith also wrestled at 174 and finished 3-2 on the day. He placed seventh in the bracket. He lost his first match after being pinned in 6:18. Mojica-Smith won his next two matches, the first via a 2:47 pin, and the second from a 4-3 decision. The senior from Evans, Ga. lost his second bout of the day from a pin, but advanced to the seventh-place match, which he won with a 4-2 decision.
Reese Ferm wrestled at 285 and placed eighth after losing the seventh-place bout. His 3-3 day started by being pinned after 2:32. He came back with three consecutive wins. The first two victories came from pins, and his opponent medically forfeited for his third triumph. The freshman lost his next match via pin in 1:26, but advanced to the seventh-place dual. Ferm was pinned in 4:01 to end his day.
Freshman
Sam Gosnell won the first two bouts of his Montreat career and finished 2-2 on the day. After finding himself on the losing end of a 15-0 tech fall, he won back-to-back contests with pins in under three minutes. Gosnell ended his day after being pinned in 2:50 in his last bout at 125.
Louis Mehaffey,
Grayson Burleson,
Bryson McCraw and
Donovan Cavender all secured one win in the tournament and finished 1-2.
"Today was about development," said head coach
Jim Connaghan. "We had guys get some much-needed mat time and find success while doing so."

The next competition for Montreat will be on Saturday, Nov. 22, when the Cavs visit Douglasville, Ga., to wrestle in the Lucha Open, hosted by Life University.
