Women’s wrestling goes 3-3 on day one of Patriot Duals

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.— The Montreat College women's wrestling team visited Williamsburg, Ky. on Friday for the start of the Patriot Duals at the University of the Cumberlands. Going head-to-head against six different programs on day one of the two-day event, the Cavaliers picked up a trio of wins while dropping three matchups against squads ranked inside the NAIA's top 10. Following the 3-3 showing, the Cavs' record moved to 11-3 overall and 2-3 against Mid-South Conference (MSC) programs.

Day one got off on the right foot as Montreat extended its best start to a season in program history. By notching a 39-8 win over Lincoln Memorial University, the Cavaliers captured their ninth consecutive victory to start the campaign. A trio of pins, two tech falls and three forfeits accounted for the Cavs' 39 points. Morgan Repasky, Sheyla Ochoa Salgado and Annastasia Skoda each registered their pins in less than 90 seconds. Meanwhile, both Daniela Espinal and Nicole Lewis tallied 10-0 tech fall triumphs. Sirenity Davis, Shay Potter and Daniella Jenkins walked away with the trio of forfeit wins.

Facing stiff competition in their second team dual match, the Cavaliers suffered their first loss of the year at the hands of the No. 1-ranked Life University Running Eagles. Vazquez pinned her foe in the 110-lb weight class, while Lewis secured a forfeit at 160. Skoda garnered a team point because she scored during her decision defeat in the 131-lb bout. Despite those efforts, Life ultimately won via a 37-11 final score.

Montreat bounced back from its initial loss with an emphatic 43-4 triumph against fellow MSC program Lourdes University. The 39-point margin of victory marked the largest in a team dual match in program history. The 43 points scored also proved to be the program's most in a team dual match. Repasky, Davis, Ochoa Salgado and Emilia Hill combined for four forfeits, while Izzy Campbell and Uriah Peters-Gutierrez totaled victories via fall. Espinal and Lewis went the distance in their respective bouts, with the former recording a 10-0 tech fall and the latter delivering a 5-2 decision. Potter also added to the squad's tally during her decision loss.

No. 6 Lindsey Wilson College outscored the Cavs 37-7 during the fourth round of Friday's team duals. In the clash between MSC squads, Espinal and Peters-Gutierrez notched Montreat's seven points at 124 and 145, respectively. A native of Brooksville, Fla., Espinal pitched a 7-0 shutout for the decision win and three points. Meanwhile, Peters-Gutierrez corralled a 12-1 tech fall triumph to round out the scoring.

For the second time this year, the Cavaliers cruised past Liberty University. The first matchup between the two sides finished as a 38-10 final, while Friday's installment concluded with a 36-12 scoreline. Once again, three forfeits set Montreat up for success—Repasky, Audrey Gribble and Hill seized the free wins. Skoda and Peters-Gutierrez also added five points apiece to the Cavs' total with swift pins versus their opposition. Vazquez and Lewis tacked on four points with their tech fall showings, and Ochoa Salgado contributed three points via a 15-6 decision.

Montreat's sixth and final showdown featured a battle against the eighth-ranked hosts. The Cavaliers made a statement early, jumping out to a 15-5 edge thanks to a trio of pins. Repasky bested the NAIA's No. 9-ranked wrestler at 103 in just 2:19. Ochoa Salgado and Espinal also topped their fellow competitors at 117 and 124, respectively. Cumberlands wasn't fazed, however, and the Patriots closed out the dual on a 26-1 run. Potter recorded the Cavs' final point in the 180-lb weight class.

"I'm really proud of how the ladies competed today," said head coach Koby Reyes. "We're looking forward to finishing the weekend strong tomorrow."
