BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.— The Montreat College women's wrestling team took on the University of Mount Olive Trojans Wednesday evening in a team dual matchup at Gardner-Webb University. Battling the NCAA Division II institution, the Cavaliers toughed out a 27-21 triumph to remain perfect on the year. Not only does the Cavs' 8-0 record signify the squad's best start to a campaign, but the eight wins also mark the team's most dual victories in a single season in program history.
Mount Olive (0-1) opened the competition with a 4-1 lead thanks to a tech fall in the 103-lb weight class. Despite suffering a defeat,
Morgan Repasky managed to score four points during the bout, which resulted in a team point for Montreat.
The Cavaliers secured their initial win of the night courtesy of
Dinayah Vazquez. Ranked No. 9 in the NAIA's 110-lb weight class, Vazquez needed just 4:34 to register a pin and put her team back on top, 6-4.
Daniela Espinal captured a forfeit triumph at 124 to counter the Trojans' forfeit victory at 117. However, UMO reclaimed the lead midway through the dual after notching a pin in the 131-lb bout. With five matchups in the books, Mount Olive maintained a 14-11 advantage.
Izzy Campbell recorded a win via pin just before the first round ended in her clash at 138. As a result, the Cavs briefly surged back in front on the team leaderboard, 16-14. A tech fall and a decision at 145 and 160, respectively, pushed the Trojans ahead, though.
Nicole Lewis managed to corral five points during her decision loss, keeping Montreat within shouting distance at 21-17 with two bouts remaining.
A forfeit and a pin sealed Montreat's record-setting victory.
Shay Potter won by default in the 180-lb weight class, vaulting the Cavaliers ahead by a point.
Daniella Jenkins then ensured the Cavs' team dual triumph by pinning her foe in 1:26. Thanks to 10 points across the final two bouts, Montreat walked away with a 27-21 win, its first over Mount Olive in three tries.
"This was a great event," said head coach
Koby Reyes. "We're thankful that Daniel Elliott, the head coach at Gardner-Webb University, invited us."
Up next, the Montreat College women's wrestling team gets right back on the mat this Friday and Saturday at the Patriot Duals, hosted by the University of the Cumberlands, in Williamsburg, Ky.
